First Time User Registration for Interlibrary Loan

To request an item through Interlibrary Loan, you must first identify yourself to the library's ILLiad system. To do this you fill out a registration form using your Web browser.
Registration has two purposes:

  • Entering your personal information into the ILLiad system means you will not have to supply the information again when making future requests.
  • By specifying your library card number and password of your choosing, you will have secure access to information about your requests. You will also be able to review the list of items you have requested in the past.

Interlibrary Loan Policies and Rules

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a special service the Central Arkansas Library System provides to its patrons. We borrow materials for short-term use from other public, university, and special libraries from all over the United States. Because these materials belong to another library, and were purchased with their monies for their patrons' use, we have special restrictions and deadlines that must be adhered to by CALS patrons.

ILL requests average 2 to 4 weeks to obtain depending upon the type of material requested. Some specialized materials may take even longer. Please take into consideration these time constraints when placing your requests.

  1. You must have a valid CALS library card with no blocks due to invalid personal information or excessive fines
  2. You may submit and have up to 5 active requests at a time. Be sure to consider that all materials could come in at once.
  3. We will not borrow a book that is either owned by or on order for any CALS library. This includes Reference and Special Collection Materials. Items that have been marked "BILLED" in our catalog system or that are excessively overdue may be requested.
  4. We will not order any item published within the previous four months.
  5. "In Library Use Only" materials, such as microfilm or anything declared to be REFERENCE or SPECIAL COLLECTION by the lending library, must be used at the Main Library.
  6. You are allowed at least 2 weeks use for any ILL item. Your due date is determined by the lending library, not by CALS. NO RENEWALS WILL BE MADE.
  7. If you do not pick up the material we have obtained for you within seven days of being notified that it is available for pick up, it will be returned to the lending library and your account will be charged $2.00.
  8. Late Fees for ILL items are $1.00 per day with a limit up to $60.00. Any fees incurred for ILL books will prohibit your checking out materials from any CALS library until the fees are paid. If an ILL item is lost or needs to be replaced, the lending library will determine the replacement cost for the lost material. This cost will be passed on to your account.

Borrowing privileges are dependent upon observing restrictions and deadlines set by the libraries from which we borrow ILL materials. Abuse of ILL rules may jeopardize future borrowing privileges for you and for this library.

About your Library Card Number and Password

During registration, you will be asked to enter your library card number and a password. You will use these two pieces of information when logging on to the ILLiad system in the future.

Library Card Number
This is found on the back of your library card. You will need to enter all 14 digits without spaces.
Choose anything you like. We recommend that you follow good security practice and choose a password that is different from those you use to access other systems.
ILLiad will encrypt your password, so it will remain secure. Only you will know your password.

Important Copyright Information

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
